OCRM, in cooperation with California's San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission, hosted the annual Western Coastal Managers' Meeting, January 5-6 in San Francisco, California.
Staff from the Washington, Oregon, California, Alaska, and Hawaii Coastal Zone Management programs participated, as well as staff from NOAA’s National Marine Sanctuaries, National Estuarine Research Reserves, National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science, Coastal Services Center, National Marine Protected Areas Center, Climate Service, and OCRM. Representatives from the Department of the Interior's Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement, and Landscape Conservation Cooperatives also attended.
Discussions centered around: sea level rise and coastal hazards; coastal and marine spatial planning; and updates from west coast Coastal Fellows, State CZM programs, and OCRM. Related to sea level rise, states discussed efforts to develop strategic frameworks, policies, and specific guidance addressing government regional, state, and local actions.
CMSP discussions focused on efforts to acquire, develop, and apply CMSP data and tools at the state and federal levels. NOAA staff provided an update on CMSP from the federal perspective.
