NOAA's Coastal Strategy
NOAA's long-term "coastal" goal aims to create invigorated, sustainable coastal communities and economies, that are more resilient and productive in part by fostering sound comprehensive land and water planning and management that is informed by improved geospatial services and whose implementation is facilitated by improved knowledge, skills, and governance.
NOAA has several programs and offices that play critical roles in achieving this goal. These programs and offices provide a range of products and services from science, information, technology, management, and policy assistance to address priority coastal issues across the United States. These NOAA "coastal" programs and offices (those with coastal mandates) have been working together over the past few years to enhance collaboration, skills, and partnerships across NOAA to better align and leverage NOAA's capabilities and funding to support the highest priority issues common to coastal managers and NOAA.
NOAA's Office of Ocean and Coastal Resource Management (OCRM) has taken the lead role in working with and coordinating NOAA's "coastal" programs and offices to devise a strategy to focus coastal programs’ and office’s investments, capabilities, and deliverables to support the development of management responses to address priority coastal management needs.
In September 2011, OCRM co-hosted a workshop along with the Coastal States Organization to build stronger relationships and mutual awareness between NOAA and National Coastal Zone Management Program state partners about the relevant capabilities and needs for two priority issues: state ocean management planning; and coastal climate change adaptation. In addition, the workshop identified points of leverage and action for state and federal parties to take to better align funding and investment in coastal management at the national, regional, and state levels.
In preparation for the September 2011 workshop, OCRM also compiled information on state coastal management program needs and priorities on ocean management planning and coastal climate change adaptation, as well as information on the different NOAA programs' and offices' capabilities for these two priority areas.
